Sikkim Launches Outreach Initiative to Promote Sustainable Fisheries Practices

Gangtok, Dec 17 (NationPress) The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), in partnership with the Fisheries Department of the Sikkim Government, initiated an outreach campaign focusing on various central government schemes in Gangtok, officials announced on Tuesday.

A senior official noted that the program was designed to foster awareness about central government initiatives in the fisheries sector while advocating for sustainable practices, entrepreneurship, and cooperative growth.

During her speech, Roshni Rai, the Secretary of the Fisheries Department for the state, underscored the vital importance of fisheries in Sikkim's economic progress and highlighted the necessity for enhancing the skills of fish farmers.

She commended the NFDB for its ongoing support and encouraged fish farmers to take full advantage of the opportunities provided under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which aims to modernize and expand the fisheries industry.

Rai pointed out the state’s potential for trout and cold-water fish farming, describing it as a specialized sector with significant prospects for entrepreneurship and value addition. She also emphasized the need to foster strong connections between farmers, cooperatives, and markets to secure better returns on their investments.

The official reiterated the Sikkim Government's dedication to sustainable fisheries development, noting that initiatives like this campaign are crucial for raising awareness, promoting innovation, and ultimately improving the livelihoods of fish farmers.

She expressed hope for the future of the fisheries sector in Sikkim, driven by collaborative efforts and the effective execution of government initiatives.

The campaign allowed fish farmers to engage with experts, discover innovative solutions, and explore entrepreneurial opportunities. This initiative is in line with the Sikkim government’s vision for sustainable aquaculture development and improving the livelihoods of fish farmers throughout the state.

The event featured K. K. Shrestha, the Director of the Fisheries Department, along with senior officials, district officers, and field staff from the Fisheries Department.

Representatives from Fisheries Cooperative Societies, Fisheries Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs), and progressive fish farmers were actively involved in the program.
