New Delhi, Oct 25 (NationPress) Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying George Kurian on Saturday urged all parties involved in the fisheries industry to enroll in the National Fisheries Development Programme (NFDP) to benefit from insurance coverage and various welfare initiatives.
During a Fisheries Outreach Programme in Thrissur, the minister emphasized that the NFDP is designed to ensure maximum advantages reach those in the fishing community, according to an official statement.
Kurian commended the Government of Kerala for its unwavering support in executing central government policies related to fisheries.
He highlighted the advancements in infrastructure, stating that numerous fishing harbors have been upgraded through collaborative efforts of both state and central governments. The minister also mentioned the availability of low-interest loans aimed at enhancing these harbors.
Kurian noted that nine integrated coastal villages in Kerala have been earmarked for development, with plans to introduce facilities such as processing centers, kiosks, and community hubs.
The central government will fully finance these initiatives to promote climate-resilient and technology-driven fisheries, with an investment of Rs 2 crore, while the state government will be responsible for identifying beneficiaries, Kurian stated.
The minister underscored the significance of boosting fisheries production, pointing out that India ranks as the second-largest fish producer and processor globally.
He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting cooperative societies of fish farmers, ensuring they reap the benefits of welfare and development schemes.
The Outreach Programme aimed to raise awareness among fishers and fish farmers regarding various welfare and livelihood enhancement schemes from the Government of India and to advocate for sustainable fisheries practices, as noted in the statement.
During the event, George Kurian distributed Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs), transponders, and NFDP registration certificates while discussing opportunities to strengthen Kerala’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors, the statement highlighted.
