Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 30 (NationPress) Six days following the enigmatic demise of a minor girl in Siliguri, located in north Bengal, authorities have apprehended the primary suspect, a private tutor, in Chennai along with another accomplice, as stated by police on Monday.
Previously, one individual was taken into custody regarding the girl's death. The incident sparked widespread protests in the region and ignited a contentious political debate between the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Qazi Shamsuddin Ahmed reported, “On March 29, we made an arrest. The interrogation led us to discover that the main suspect, Amir Ali, had escaped to Chennai. Our police team promptly traveled there, detained him, and returned with him. Another individual named Samir Ali was also arrested. We are committed to ensuring that the accused face the harshest penalties.”
The tragic incident unfolded last week in the Kulipara area of Ward No. 1 in Siliguri. The girl's death was categorized as unnatural, with claims of involvement from her private tutor, Amir Ali, who had been evading capture since the occurrence, inciting outrage in the community. Locals organized protests and obstructed roads, demanding immediate action.
BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh initiated a sit-in protest as well. Siliguri's Mayor and prominent Trinamool Congress leader Goutam Deb visited the victim's family and urged the police to hasten the inquiry.
After the arrests, BJP MP Raju Bista expressed gratitude to the police for detaining the suspect and demanded a death sentence for him. He also requested Shankar Ghosh to end his protest.
Ghosh held a press conference at the protest site, thanking the citizens of Siliguri for their support. He mentioned that he had paused his election campaign, but would now resume it immediately, attributing the delayed apprehension to the suspect's ties to a specific political party.
In response to the accusations, Goutam Deb remarked, “The BJP is engaging in unnecessary political maneuvers regarding the minor's death. The police have been diligently performing their responsibilities; they have successfully arrested Amir Ali, the primary suspect.”
“We have been fully attentive to this incident. I personally communicated with the police commissioner and visited the minor victim's family to express solidarity. However, I chose not to indulge in petty politics over this matter. The police have executed their duties excellently by apprehending the suspect from outside the city,” he added.
