Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 26 (NationPress) A significant protest erupted in Siliguri, West Bengal, on Thursday after a tribal pregnant woman was assaulted by a civic volunteer, leading to the tragic loss of her unborn child, according to officials.
On Thursday afternoon, members of the tribal community marched towards the 'Uttarkanya' (the branch Secretariat of the West Bengal government in northern Bengal) to express their outrage.
The demonstrators attempted to breach police barricades, resulting in a confrontation with law enforcement.
As tensions escalated, police responded by deploying tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.
According to police reports and local sources, the conflict originated from a dispute regarding land acquisition.
Just a month prior, tensions flared over the acquisition of land in Phansidewa, close to Siliguri, where a civic volunteer was accused of assaulting a pregnant woman.
The police have apprehended the accused civic volunteer, identified as Mohammad Kader, but four other individuals involved in the incident remain unaccounted for.
The recent loss of her unborn child has heightened the community's anger, culminating in Thursday’s protest.
The protesters are demanding severe penalties for the civic volunteer involved in the incident.
A substantial police presence was established to maintain order, and the situation was eventually brought under control.
A senior officer from the Siliguri Police Commissionerate stated, "Some protesters gathered and initiated an agitation, which continued for a while before order was restored."
The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the incident, calling for stringent punishment for the accused.
The BJP issued a statement saying, "Tension is palpable surrounding the Uttarkanya Abhiyan initiated by Janajati Suraksha Mancha, which is demanding justice for the victim in Siliguri's Phulbari. As the procession advanced, clashes ensued with police employing cane charges, water cannons, and tear gas, creating a battleground-like atmosphere."
"Protesters are insisting on the arrest of the individual responsible for assaulting the pregnant woman, and they vow to continue their movement until justice is served," the statement concluded.
