Suvendu Adhikari Critiques Bengal Government After Disturbing Video Surfaces
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 23 (NationPress) A controversial video has surfaced, showing a civic volunteer affiliated with the West Bengal Police physically assaulting a truck driver after the driver reportedly refused to pay an extortion fee. This incident prompted a scathing response from the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.
On Monday, Adhikari took to social media to share the alarming footage, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
While IANS could not independently verify the video's authenticity, its contents have raised serious concerns.
In his post, Adhikari criticized the Mamata Banerjee administration, accusing it of fostering an environment of institutional corruption. He stated, "Police are soliciting bribes by halting vehicles under the guise of 'naka' checking across the state. Those who refuse to comply face false charges or physical violence."
He further asserted that a specific group of civic volunteers or home guards collaborates with law enforcement, resorting to violence against drivers unlawfully. "This video serves as evidence of such misconduct, despite them lacking any legal authority to act in this manner," Adhikari noted.
He indicated that the incident occurred on February 19 at the Dankuni toll plaza in the Hooghly district.
"The footage was captured by an injured truck driver and his assistant near the toll plaza, showing a civic volunteer unjustly attacking the driver with a stick. While any traffic violation may warrant legal repercussions, no law permits such brutality in India," he emphasized.
Adhikari called for immediate identification and legal action against the volunteer involved, along with punitive measures.
"However, such accountability seems unlikely, as these actions appear to be tacitly supported by the government. Immediate changes are essential; hence, this Trinamool government must be removed," he asserted.
