Kolkata, Nov 13 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal Assembly and senior BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari, revealed to reporters on Thursday that he received a threatening phone call from Pakistan just two days prior.
"I often get threat calls from Bangladesh, but this Tuesday marked the first instance of a threat call from Pakistan," stated LoP Adhikari.
Despite this alarming situation, he mentioned that he has yet to file a complaint with either the West Bengal Police or Kolkata Police, believing that doing so would be an exercise in futility.
"Nevertheless, I consistently report these threats to the appropriate channels," LoP Adhikari added.
He did not clarify what he meant by "appropriate channels."
During this media interaction, LoP Adhikari launched a fierce critique against the West Bengal government and the Trinamool Congress, asserting that certain areas in West Bengal have become safe havens for members of underground Islamic fundamentalist groups linked to Bangladesh.
He referred to the riot-like conditions that erupted earlier this year in the minority-majority Murshidabad district, which saw protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act turn violent. He claimed that this district has long served as a refuge for these terrorist organizations.
"Members of the Ansarullah Bangla Team have been apprehended, having operated there for over a year while running a madrasa. West Bengal is a safe spot for these Islamic terrorist groups, which is why they do not resort to bombings here. Yet, individuals like me receive threatening calls," Adhikari emphasized.
In response, the Trinamool Congress accused the LoP of fabricating such claims to maintain relevance in light of recent events, including a car blast in New Delhi this week.
"LoP Adhikari is aware that his credibility is waning. Hence, he resorts to these unfounded allegations to remain in the spotlight," remarked Arup Chakraborty, a spokesperson for the Trinamool Congress.
Since 2020, security measures for LoP Adhikari have been enhanced multiple times due to perceived threats.
In 2024, his security was bolstered twice—initially in October and again in December. In October, the Union Home Ministry extended his Z-category security, which was previously confined to West Bengal, to cover him nationwide, following intelligence reports highlighting an increased threat to his safety.
Subsequently, in December of the previous year, the Union Home Ministry further upgraded his security in West Bengal, increasing the CAPF personnel accompanying his convoy and public events to at least 22 armed guards.
