Kolkata, Oct 19 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, encountered protests from a group of individuals in Raidighi, located in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Sunday.
Protesters struck the vehicle he was in and chanted slogans against him while he was present in the district to inaugurate Kali Puja.
This incident follows a recent attack on the convoy of BJP Darjeeling MP Raju Bista in North Bengal by miscreants, and it comes weeks after assaults on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Shankar Ghosh.
In August, Adhikari's convoy was also targeted in Cooch Behar district during a protest rally.
On Sunday, a crowd that included women began protesting as soon as Adhikari's convoy entered the area, expressing their dissatisfaction with the Centre’s decision to halt funds for 100 days’ work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in West Bengal. Fortunately, no significant damage to the convoy was reported, and Adhikari was unharmed.
The Leader of Opposition stated on X, "In South 24 Parganas district, today I faced repeated attacks from illegal Bangladeshi Muslims. The obstruction, vandalism, and chaos were orchestrated by TMC Zila Parishad Member Rekha Gazi with the assistance of SP Koteswara Rao. Numerous attempts were made to halt my vehicle at several locations, with an attack occurring right in front of Lalpur Madrasa."
He added, "This is a social event (inauguration of Kali Puja). All Hindus have come to the event. I have come as a Hindu. I did not come here to solicit votes for the party. I did not come with our party flag. They are trying to obstruct me on the road. They are banging on the cars. They are standing in front of cars in protest. I have come here to participate in a religious program. I did not come here as a BJP leader."
The BJP leader asserted that infiltrators have entered the region and are attempting to undermine democracy.
"In reality, those individuals, who are primarily illegal infiltrators, are anxious about their future due to the SIR process, which explains their outbursts. This area is adjacent to Bangladesh, and its proximity has allowed them to settle here with the support of the infiltrator-friendly TMC ecosystem," he mentioned on X.
"Can’t a Hindu freely attend any religious event in the State of West Bengal without facing disruptions from radicals? They cannot intimidate me; I will return during Jagadhatri Puja as well.
"This is why you, the original residents of this district, are unable to practice your religion and cultural events properly. Those with financial means are being compelled to sell their land and relocate to Sonarpur, Baruipur, and Kolkata. In fact, as the number of Hindus dwindles in Bangladesh, Hindus are on the brink of disappearing," concluded Adhikari.
