Kolkata, Dec 29 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has clarified that alternatives to the designated "land or house allotment certificates" will not be recognized as valid identity documents during the hearing sessions concerning claims and objections related to the draft voters' list in West Bengal.
The sessions began on Saturday.
The Commission had identified a total of 13 documents, among which "any land/house allotment certificate by the Government" is listed as the 11th document.
According to insiders from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office in West Bengal, the system for uploading identity documents into the Commission's database is designed in such a way that any land or housing finance certificate not specified by the Commission—such as "any land/house allotment certificate by Government"—cannot be uploaded.
Thus, the certificates issued by the West Bengal government under the "Banglar Bari" housing finance scheme will not automatically qualify as valid identity documents.
An insider from the CEO's office further explained that the ECI does not recognize the "Banglar Bari" certificate as a legitimate land or house allotment certificate because the ECI-specified 11th document indicates a specific plot of land or house allocated to the voter.
In contrast, the 'Banglar Bari' scheme functions merely as a housing finance initiative, where voters obtain funds to purchase or construct a house, but it does not specify any particular property.
The hearing sessions regarding claims and objections commenced on December 27, with the final voters' list set to be published on February 14 next year. Shortly thereafter, the ECI will announce the polling dates for the crucial Assembly elections planned for next year.
