Intense competition anticipated among major political factions.

Thiruvananthapuram, March 15 (NationPress) Kerala's General Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, confidently stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will struggle to establish a presence in the Nemom constituency, asserting that the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is poised to dominate all 14 Assembly seats in the Thiruvananthapuram district during the upcoming elections.

While addressing the media, Sivankutty, who currently holds the Nemom Assembly seat, predicted that the BJP’s chances remain bleak, emphasizing that the Left Front will maintain its robust influence throughout the capital area.

“There’s no justification for the electorate to choose anything but the Left. This government has been effective for all citizens, implementing initiatives that benefit various segments of society,” he remarked, highlighting the accomplishments of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's administration.

Since 2016, Nemom has been a politically pivotal constituency in Kerala. That year, veteran BJP figure and former Union Minister of State O. Rajagopal made history by winning the seat, marking the party's first presence in the 140-member Kerala Legislative Assembly.

This landmark victory provided the BJP with a tactical foothold in a state where transforming vote share into Assembly representation had previously proven difficult.

However, in the 2021 Assembly elections, the seat reverted to the Left when Sivankutty triumphed over prominent BJP leader Kummanam Rajasekharan, a former Governor and past state president of the BJP.

Sivankutty's win allowed him to reclaim the constituency he had lost to Rajagopal five years earlier.

With the next Assembly elections nearing, Nemom is again anticipated to be a battleground among the three main political factions: the LDF, the Congress-led United Democratic Front, and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance. Observers note that Nemom remains symbolically significant for the BJP, which is eager to recover the seat that once marked its initial success in Kerala's political landscape.

The minister, despite concerns over his health, expressed optimism regarding the Left Front’s overall standing in the capital district, confidently asserting that the LDF will secure all 14 Assembly seats in the upcoming election.

Previously, State BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar declared his intent to contest his first Assembly election from Nemom. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, although he lost to incumbent MP Shashi Tharoor, Chandrasekhar performed strongly in the Nemom Assembly segment, bolstering the BJP's confidence to compete in this constituency.

Point of View

The assertion by Minister V. Sivankutty underscores the ongoing rivalry among the LDF, Congress, and BJP. The fate of Nemom and its political significance remains pivotal in the upcoming elections, reflecting broader trends in Kerala's electoral dynamics.
