Has the Lotus Bloomed in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation as BJP Becomes a Dominant Force?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 13 (NationPress) The BJP has made history in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, marking the first instance of the lotus blooming within the civic framework of the capital city.
The BJP-led NDA has achieved a significant milestone, securing 50 seats in the recently enlarged 101-member corporation, thereby establishing itself as the predominant political force. Voting in one ward at Vizhinjam was deferred due to the passing of a candidate.
The final results indicate that the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) garnered 29 seats, while the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) obtained 19. Two seats were won by Independents.
This outcome represents a significant shift in the political landscape of the capital, traditionally a stronghold for the Left. In the previous 100-member Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, the BJP-led NDA held 35 seats, CPI(M) had 51, and the Congress-led UDF claimed 10, with the rest occupied by Independents.
The recent election results not only bolster the BJP's stature but also indicate a marked decline in Left influence within Kerala's capital.
Responding to the results, State BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that the local elections have signaled a 'game over' for the Left in Kerala. He characterized the Congress's successes in other regions as fleeting and emphasized the BJP's focus on the forthcoming Assembly elections.
"Our vision is 'Viksithu Keralam'. The BJP in Kerala is on a clear upward trajectory. Observe our performance statewide and our increasing vote share. We aimed for a 25% vote share and are confident of achieving at least 20%," noted Chandrasekhar.
When questioned about the mayoral position in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, Chandrasekhar refrained from giving specifics, only stating, 'Stay tuned.'
With the BJP emerging as the leading force and the Left pushed to the periphery, analysts believe that Kerala's political contest is transitioning into a new chapter. Chandrasekhar echoed this sentiment, asserting that the next significant political confrontation in the state will be between the BJP and the Congress, indicating a major realignment in Kerala's political dynamics.
