Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 13 (NationPress) As the counting of votes in Kerala's local body elections reaches a pivotal moment, the Pinarayi Vijayan-led CPI-M is encountering a remarkable setback, with the ruling party experiencing significant losses even in its historically strong areas.
Overall, the advantages have shifted towards the Congress-led UDF and the BJP-led NDA, particularly in the state capital city, the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
Throughout various corporations, the CPI-M is facing substantial defeats, with losses in Kozhikode, Kollam, and Kozhikode corporations being especially surprising.
Historically, the CPI-M has successfully maintained its strongholds in local elections, often retaining its influence in panchayat governance even during challenging political times. However, this trend appears to have shifted significantly this time.
While the UDF is leading in 371 gram panchayats, the LDF is only ahead in 355, indicating a noticeable decline in the CPI-M's influence in rural communities.
The situation in corporations is even more alarming, as the CPI-M is facing major losses.
Out of the six corporations in the state, the Congress is leading in four, while the CPI-M is only ahead in one.
In the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, which the CPI-M has ruled for years, the party is trailing behind the BJP, highlighting the extent of the loss.
A similar pattern is evident in the municipalities, where the Congress is in the lead in 51 municipalities, compared to the LDF’s lead in just 32.
Despite entering the elections with promises of increased welfare pensions, these measures have not yielded the expected results for the party, even after securing a consecutive term in power at the state level.
It is clear that the Sabarimala gold smuggling case has significantly impacted the party's core support.
Gains that were hard-won, especially in urban areas, now appear to have dissipated.
The leadership will need to diligently analyze this defeat, which represents one of the most serious challenges the CPI(M) has faced in recent local body elections.
