Kolkata, Sep 19 (NationPress) A policeman was assaulted while attempting to manage a disturbance in the Netaji Nagar locality of South Kolkata.
A sub-inspector from the local police station responded on Thursday after being alerted about a gathering of troublemakers armed with weapons in front of a lawyer's residence.
Upon his arrival, he attempted to restore order but was met with an attack from the miscreants. As a result, six individuals were apprehended in relation to this incident.
The police reported that the local station had received word the previous night that around 8 to 10 troublemakers had assembled outside the home of a lawyer named Dipayan Ghosh, who resides in Netaji Nagar.
The group was allegedly wielding knives and other dangerous items.
They were reportedly threatening the lawyer, who also serves as the Trinamool Youth President for Ward 99 within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area.
Upon learning of the situation, sub-inspector Dinabandhu Kesh and his constables arrived at the scene. When he sought to control the situation, the miscreants reportedly attacked him.
The injured sub-inspector was left bleeding after the assault. According to police sources, the group was led by an individual named Jayanta Ghosh.
Moreover, several women were also part of the group. As police attempted to detain the miscreants, the women are alleged to have obstructed the officers.
Following the altercation, three miscreants were arrested on-site, while Jayanta Ghosh managed to escape. Moments later, Ghosh and his associates caused a disturbance at Bagha Jatin State General Hospital, assaulting medical personnel and the on-duty doctor.
The police rushed to the hospital, and during this second confrontation, the miscreants attempted to attack officers with a surgical instrument before they were subdued.
In total, three additional individuals, including Jayanta Ghosh, were arrested at the hospital, bringing the total number of arrests in this incident to six.
“A total of six individuals have been apprehended for assaulting a policeman and threatening a lawyer. We are conducting an investigation,” stated a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
A suo motu case has been filed at Netaji Nagar Police Station against the arrested individuals, and an investigation has commenced.
