What Happened When a Small Plane Made an Emergency Landing in Odisha?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Jan 10 (NationPress) Reports indicate that six passengers were injured, including one seriously, on Saturday when a nine-seater aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in a field approximately 10 km from the Rourkela airstrip in Odisha, according to officials.
The IndiaOne Air plane was operating a regular regional connectivity service from Rourkela to Bhubaneswar when it experienced a technical issue shortly after take-off.
The pilot suffered serious injuries and was quickly transported to the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) Hospital for medical attention, while the other passengers were treated for minor injuries at the same facility.
There were a total of seven individuals aboard the aircraft.
Odisha's Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena remarked that the pilot executed a belly-landing on grass near Jalda in the Raghunathpali area to prevent crashing into a residential area.
"The passengers have sustained minor injuries and are stable. Thankfully, a major tragedy was averted," Jena stated to reporters.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi voiced his concern regarding the incident and instructed the administration to ensure optimal medical care for the injured.
"I have directed the provision of immediate medical services to those injured, and I am personally overseeing the situation," the CM posted on X.
The injured were first taken to a local hospital before being transferred to RSP Hospital, Rourkela, for specialized care.
Hospital sources reported that while the passengers are stable, the pilot sustained significant injuries during the incident.
Local residents promptly arrived to assist in rescue operations following the aircraft's smooth landing on grass.
Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) Director Prasanna Pradhan confirmed that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified about the incident, according to media reports.
The aircraft's fuselage sustained damage, with its nose-gear sheared off, although the wings remained intact.
This incident contributes to rising concerns regarding aviation safety in the country, especially following the severe Air India crash in Ahmedabad in June 2025 and a recent increase in technical diversions. Experts have pointed to a critical shortage of regulatory oversight.
A formal investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is anticipated to commence soon to clarify the precise nature of the mechanical failure.
