Bhubaneswar, April 6 (NationPress) One pilgrim lost their life, while 16 others were injured when a bus flipped over near the CIFA area on the Bhubaneswar-Puri National Highway this past Sunday.

The injured individuals have been taken to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. The bus, transporting pilgrims from Bangladesh, was headed to Puri, carrying over 65 passengers.

The group, originating from the Chattogram districts of Bangladesh, was on a religious journey intending to visit Lord Jagannath in Puri and subsequently the Vishwanath Temple.

Prior to their arrival in Odisha, they had visited Ayodhya and Dwarka.

Traveling in two buses, they comprised approximately 140 pilgrims in total. The accident transpired when the driver of the second bus reportedly dozed off.

This caused the vehicle to veer from the road and fall into a ditch near Siphon. Passengers found themselves trapped and called for assistance. Fellow travelers from the first bus, alongside local residents and police, initiated immediate rescue efforts.

Emergency responders, including ambulances and fire services, quickly arrived to assist and continue the rescue operations.

One critically injured individual reportedly passed away while being transported to the hospital, while others remain in serious condition.

Local residents are actively participating in the rescue and relief efforts.

“A total of 16 pilgrims from Bangladesh suffered injuries in the incident occurring in the Pipili police station area during the early hours on Sunday. A woman named Nonibala Nath from Bangladesh succumbed to her injuries while en route to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar,” stated Souymendu Sekhar Tripathy, Inspector In-Charge of the Pipili police station.

Tripathy further mentioned that three seriously injured individuals have been referred to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, for specialized treatment.

“Other pilgrims with minor injuries have been released following initial treatment. While the definitive cause of the accident is still under investigation, it is suspected that exhaustion may have led the driver to fall asleep,” said Tripathy.
