Solar microgrids power 11,933 families in remote Tripura villages
Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Sunday, 10 May inaugurated a solar microgrid project and a community-based solar purified drinking water plant at Khabaksa Kami village under Teliamura in the Baramura hill range of Khowai district, bringing electricity and clean drinking water to households long cut off by difficult terrain. Across the state, 11,933 families in 347 remote habitations have now been covered under the solar microgrid initiative, implemented by the Power Department in collaboration with the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA).
Why Conventional Power Lines Could Not Reach
The Baramura hill range and similar terrain across Tripura present near-insurmountable challenges for conventional electricity infrastructure. Extending electric poles and live transmission lines into these geographically isolated pockets is, according to the minister, practically impossible. The 42 families of Khabaksa Kami village — belonging to different communities — had long endured severe electricity-related problems before Sunday's inauguration.
