Tripura minister launches Bijayanagar Smart Gram Panchayat, cites 543 homes built
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tripura Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Friday, 31 July inaugurated the Bijayanagar Smart and Boutique Gram Panchayat at Mohanpur in West Tripura district, declaring that rural empowerment is the foundation of national strength. Nath credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on the financial, social, and infrastructure development of villages as the driving force behind the transformation visible in the panchayat.
Key Developments at Bijayanagar Gram Panchayat
The minister detailed a series of measurable gains in the panchayat since the present government took office. On housing, Nath noted that only 34 houses had been provided under government schemes before the current administration, compared to 543 houses constructed and handed over to beneficiaries since then, with another 89 houses already sanctioned.
Drinking water access has seen a similarly sharp expansion. Where only 35 households previously had piped water connections — largely restricted to roadside homes — 846 households now receive piped drinking water under various government initiatives.
Road and Sanitation Infrastructure
Connectivity within the panchayat has also improved substantially. The area previously had a single blacktopped road; it now has seven blacktopped roads with a combined length of more than 16 kilometres. Sanitation facilities, which were described as near-absent earlier, have been extended across the village under the current government's tenure.
'Earlier, there were hardly any proper toilet facilities in the village. The present government has ensured that toilets have been provided to the people, improving sanitation, hygiene and the overall quality of life,' Nath said.
What the Government Said
Addressing the gathering, Nath framed rural development as a collective responsibility with direct consequences for state and national progress. 'Everyone must work to strengthen our villages. If villages become stronger, the state will become stronger and more prosperous, and in turn, the country will also become stronger,' he said.
He added that Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and Prime Minister Modi are 'continuously working for the welfare of the people,' and committed that no eligible beneficiary would be excluded from government welfare schemes.
Broader Context
The inauguration of Bijayanagar as a Smart and Boutique Gram Panchayat is part of a wider push by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Tripura government to showcase rural development as a model aligned with the Centre's village-empowerment agenda. This comes amid ongoing efforts by the state administration to demonstrate governance outcomes ahead of local body cycles. The panchayat's progress — spanning housing, water, roads, and sanitation — is being positioned as a replicable template for rural transformation across the state.
With guidelines for further housing sanctions already in place, the state government is expected to extend similar infrastructure drives to other gram panchayats in West Tripura district in the coming months.
