Kannur, April 10 (NationPress) This was a remarkable rescue mission, a first of its kind in Kerala's Kannur district, where local authorities worked diligently and community members rallied together. The outcome filled the area with joy, and everyone expressed gratitude for the successful effort.
The distressed animal was a sparrow trapped inside a glass display case in a textile shop. This shop in Ullikal had been closed for six months due to a legal dispute directed by the Kerala High Court.
According to reports, the frantic chirping of the sparrow drew attention, prompting Kannur District Collector Arun K. Vijayan to take action. He quickly instructed the local body secretary in Ullikal to assess the situation and find a way to rescue the sparrow.
After gathering information, Vijayan contacted officials at the Kerala High Court on Thursday, who subsequently relayed the matter to Kannur district judge Nissar Ahamed.
At 10:30 a.m., Judge Ahamed arrived at the scene with local government officials and ordered the shop to be unlocked.
Within just 15 minutes, two locks were released, allowing access to the glass door of the showcase.
The frightened sparrow, sensing the danger, attempted to escape as one of the rescuers gently grasped it.
As the rescuer emerged from the shop, the officials and a gathering crowd erupted in cheers. The rescuer then raised his hand and carefully set the sparrow free. The bird soared into the sky and eventually landed on a tree branch.
"I want to express my gratitude to the locals and the media for bringing this matter to the attention of the authorities. The swift action taken by officials turned this into a reality," stated Ahamed.
Reports indicate that it was on Wednesday that locals first noticed the small sparrow trapped between the shutter and the glass showcase.
Initially, the locals approached the Fire Force and Forest officials for assistance, but due to the High Court's directive, both agencies were unable to provide help.
Eventually, the community managed to provide water and food through a narrow gap on the side of the showcase. They identified a tiny opening on one side of the shutter, where the sparrow had fallen in, yet despite its efforts, it could not escape through the same opening.
