Chennai, Feb 26 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, has reached out to the film star-turned-politician and TVK president Vijay for an all-party gathering set for March 5, aimed at addressing the matter of delimitation.
On Wednesday, the Chief Minister sent the invitation to Vijay along with representatives from 45 other political parties for this significant meeting.
CM Stalin initiated this all-party dialogue to tackle worries that delimitation might lead to a reduction in Tamil Nadu’s representation in Parliament. He remarked that Tamil Nadu, which has consistently excelled in development metrics, could be substantially impacted by this process.
At present, Tamil Nadu holds 39 Lok Sabha seats; however, CM Stalin cautioned that the state might potentially lose up to eight seats due to delimitation, which is determined by population statistics.
He stated, “Tamil Nadu would only have 31 MPs instead of 39.” Even if the total number of MPs across India were to increase proportionately, Tamil Nadu would still experience a decline in representation.
CM Stalin stressed that states with larger populations would gain more representation, thereby diminishing Tamil Nadu’s influence in Parliament.
He maintained that this issue transcends mere seat numbers and touches upon the core rights of the state. In a bid to unite all political parties and leaders in Tamil Nadu, he has organized the March 5 meeting to discuss this vital issue.
CM Stalin called upon all parties to overlook their political disagreements and engage in the discussion, stating, “I urge all political parties and leaders to participate in the meeting and voice their opinions.”
Referring to delimitation as the “Sword of Damocles” looming over the Southern states, CM Stalin highlighted that these regions have successfully implemented population control strategies over recent decades.
He had earlier commented that the delimitation process might lead people to consider having “16 children” — a nod to a Tamil adage regarding 16 varieties of wealth. He contended that because Tamil Nadu has adopted family planning, the state now faces the fallout of diminished Parliamentary representation.
Moreover, CM Stalin encouraged newly married couples to choose traditional Tamil names for their children, subtly addressing the ongoing language debate. His remarks come against the backdrop of the BJP’s advocacy for a three-language policy, which has ignited intense discussions in the state.
