Chennai, May 28 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin once again emphasized the importance of reclaiming Katchatheevu from Sri Lanka, declaring that it is the sole viable solution to the ongoing challenges faced by Tamil Nadu’s fishermen.
During a government event in Tiruvottiyur, close to Chennai, Stalin referenced the recent special resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, which called upon the Union government to take action in recovering the islet.
He highlighted the ongoing struggles endured by the fishing community due to repeated arrests and confiscation of boats by the Sri Lankan Navy.
“In just the past four years, a total of 1,383 fishermen have been detained, and 185 boats have been seized over 97 incidents by the Sri Lankan Navy. I have sent 76 letters to the Prime Minister and the Union Minister for External Affairs, demanding the release of these fishermen and their vessels,” stated Stalin.
He pointed out that the relentless efforts of the DMK and its allied MPs in Parliament have yielded positive results.
“Thanks to our persistent advocacy, 1,354 fishermen have been freed so far. We are diligently working to secure the release of the remaining 29. However, since 2018, 229 boats are still held by the Sri Lankan government,” he added.
While emphasizing the political and diplomatic initiatives, the Chief Minister also elaborated on the financial assistance his government has extended to impacted fishermen.
“Initially, we granted Rs 5 lakh each to 129 mechanized boat owners and Rs 1.5 lakh each to 26 country craft owners. This compensation was later raised to Rs 6 lakh and subsequently to Rs 8 lakh,” he mentioned.
At the event, Stalin inaugurated 13 infrastructure projects worth Rs 596 crore and rolled out multiple initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the fishing community in the Palk Bay region.
One of these initiatives was the launch of ‘Alaigal’, a microfinance program focused on women’s self-help groups. Welfare assistance totaling Rs 10 crore was also distributed to over 2,200 beneficiaries.
Underlining the government’s dedication to improving fishing infrastructure, the Chief Minister announced that out of seven planned fishing harbors with a total budget of Rs 258 crore, four are operational, while work on the remaining three is ongoing.
The event witnessed the presence of Ministers Anitha R. Radhakrishnan and P.K. Sekarbabu, North Chennai MP Kalanidhi Veeraswamy, and several MLAs, along with senior government officials.
