Chennai, March 3 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has appealed to the citizens of the state to consider having more children, highlighting concerns regarding the potential loss of parliamentary seats due to the upcoming delimitation process.
During a function on Monday, CM Stalin cautioned that Tamil Nadu's achievements in family planning could lead to a decrease in Lok Sabha seats if delimitation is conducted based on population metrics.
“Should delimitation be executed strictly according to population data, Tamil Nadu could lose eight parliamentary seats. This would severely undermine our representation in Parliament,” he remarked, stressing the critical nature of the issue.
CM Stalin pointed out that, historically, people were encouraged to delay having children, but in light of the current circumstances, he is now advocating for immediate action.
He framed this matter as more than just a numerical issue, referring to it as a fundamental question about the state’s rights and its influence on a national scale.
As a preliminary measure, he announced plans to gather all political parties in Tamil Nadu for a discussion on the topic. “This is a vital issue for our state. I call upon all political parties to put aside their differences, participate in the meeting, and share their perspectives,” he urged.
Comparing the scenario to the “Sword of Damocles” looming over southern states, CM Stalin contended that Tamil Nadu and other states that have successfully implemented population control measures are being unfairly punished.
He previously noted that under such conditions, individuals might feel obligated to have “16 children”, alluding to a Tamil proverb about the 16 forms of wealth.
However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has rejected CM Stalin’s assertions, claiming that no southern state will experience a reduction in parliamentary seats as a result of delimitation.
While addressing party members in Coimbatore recently, HM Shah stated, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has clearly indicated in the Lok Sabha that even post-delimitation, no southern state will see a decrease in its seats.”
The discussion surrounding delimitation remains a hot-button issue, with political leaders in Tamil Nadu persistently expressing concerns regarding its possible effects on the state's representation in Parliament.
