Chennai, Aug 12 (NationPress) In a significant effort to ensure food security and alleviate the challenges faced by some of society's most vulnerable groups, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin introduced the 'Chief Minister's Thayumanavar' scheme on Tuesday.
This initiative is set to provide ration items directly to the residences of senior citizens aged 70 and above, along with differently-abled beneficiaries throughout the state.
The official inauguration occurred in Chennai, where CM Stalin personally delivered ration supplies to a differently-abled beneficiary in Korukkupet, symbolizing the start of this statewide program.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the scheme demonstrates the government’s dedication to enhancing accessibility to essential services for individuals who might face mobility issues or health challenges.
According to the state administration, the program is expected to benefit 21,70,454 individuals in total. Among these, 20,42,657 are senior citizens from 15,81,364 ration card-holding households, while 1,27,797 are differently-abled individuals from 91,969 households.
The government has mandated that the supplies be delivered without necessitating beneficiaries to travel to fair price shops, thus minimizing physical strain and enhancing convenience.
This scheme will follow a fixed monthly schedule, with ration deliveries occurring on the second Saturday and Sunday. Items distributed under the Public Distribution System (PDS) — including rice, wheat, sugar, palmolein oil, and toor dal — will be included in the doorstep delivery.
Officials noted that Tamil Nadu operates over 34,800 fair price shops under the PDS, and this new delivery system will utilize this network for effective last-mile connectivity.
Special delivery teams have been established to guarantee timely distribution and uphold quality and accuracy in the supply chain.
CM Stalin emphasized that this scheme is a component of a broader vision to enhance welfare delivery mechanisms in the state, particularly for those who might otherwise be excluded from accessing their entitlements.
“It is our duty to ensure that the elderly and differently-abled do not endure the indignity of struggling for essentials. This scheme is a step towards making governance compassionate and people-focused,” he stated.
The launch was graced by senior ministers, government officials, and beneficiaries, who embraced the scheme as a vital initiative merging efficiency with empathy.
