Are Students Prepared to Elevate Protests Over Telangana's Land Recovery from University?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Jan 9 (NationPress) Students from Moulana Azad National Urdu University issued a warning on Friday, indicating they would escalate their protests if the Telangana government persists in its decision to reclaim 50 acres from the university. A faction of these students reached out to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K. T. Rama Rao to deliberate on their strategy regarding the show-cause notice that the state issued to the university officials.
Recently, the revenue authorities dispatched a show-cause notice to MANUU Registrar Ishtiaq Ahmad, demanding an explanation as to why the vacant land within the university's campus in Manikonda village, Gandipet mandal, should not be reclaimed, citing that it has remained unused for its intended purpose.
The students expressed worries about the state government’s actions, conveying to the BRS leader that it jeopardizes the university's future.
A student representative mentioned to reporters that he had received threatening calls following his announcement regarding the planned protests against the notice. He expressed that they perceive no distinction between the policies of the BJP government at the center and the Congress administration in Telangana.
Pointing out that there are 60,000 students from various parts of the country enrolled at MANUU, he cautioned that any infringement on the university's interests could severely damage the Congress party's reputation nationwide.
K. T. Rama Rao accused the Congress government of attempting to undermine MANUU, the sole Urdu university in India, dubbing it a “jewel of Hyderabad.”
He further charged that the Congress administration is engaged in efforts to illegally acquire 50 acres of university land for a real estate project.
KTR remarked that the state government has developed a reputation as a “serial land grabber,” similar to a serial killer.
He pointed out that the Congress government has consistently seized land from various universities, first taking land from the Agriculture University under the pretext of High Court orders, and then attempting to capture 400 acres of Hyderabad Central University. This attempt was halted temporarily due to student protests, public opposition, and Supreme Court intervention.
The BRS leader noted that even though the Supreme Court identified a Rs 10,000 crore land scam involving Hyderabad Central University, the central government has yet to conduct any inquiries.
KTR characterized the state government as acting like a real estate broker, seizing lands belonging to educational institutions, and assured MANUU students that the BRS would support them.
He promised that once BRS regains power, it would allocate necessary funds from the state for the university’s expansion.
He questioned why the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who professes to protect minorities, is permitting the Telangana Congress government to encroach upon MANUU land.
“Is this your Mohabbat Ki Dukaan? Is dismantling a university that serves minority students from across the nation your notion of protection?” he challenged Rahul Gandhi.
