Sambalpur (Odisha), March 29 (NationPress) Sujata Bhuyan, a fish farmer from Odisha's Sambalpur, expressed her profound joy after Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged her contributions during the 132nd episode of 'Mann Ki Baat'. This recognition marked a moment of pride and emotional significance for both her and her family.

In response to the honor, Sujata conveyed her gratitude, stating that her journey in fish farming had attained national recognition. “I am extremely grateful to the Prime Minister for mentioning me. It brings immense pride to my family and me. His encouragement has inspired me to strive even harder,” she remarked.

During the broadcast, the Prime Minister lauded fishermen as a “vital foundation of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” emphasizing their role in bolstering both families and the national economy. He shared Sujata’s motivating story, highlighting her ability to turn challenges into a thriving enterprise within a few years.

Sujata, residing in the LIC Colony of Mudipada, embarked on her fish farming journey in 2022 after visiting the Hirakud Reservoir, where she first encountered fish farming activities. Inspired, she reached out to the Fisheries Department, underwent training, and initiated her business with the support of a bank loan.

Reflecting on her early experiences, she mentioned the significant challenges she faced. “Initially, it was quite tough. Balancing household duties while frequently visiting the reservoir was challenging. I also dealt with issues like unpredictable weather and securing fish feed,” she recounted.

Despite these obstacles, Sujata remained resolute in her pursuit of success and gradually built her confidence as her efforts began to yield positive results. “Over time, conditions improved. I learned from my experiences, and with the assistance of the Fisheries Department, I was able to grow my business,” she added.

According to reports, Sujata generated approximately Rs 6 lakh in her first year and has become a beacon of inspiration for numerous women. She is also recognized for her contributions in supplying fish to markets beyond her state.

Currently, Sujata produces about 25 to 30 tonnes of fish annually using cage culture techniques, distributing her products to markets in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal. She expressed that achieving financial independence and enhancing her family's income has been one of her greatest achievements.

She credited government initiatives, including training and financial support, for her accomplishments. “Without the backing of the Fisheries Department and access to loans, initiating and maintaining this venture would have been exceedingly difficult,” she stated.

Highlighting her journey, the Prime Minister remarked that despite her role as a homemaker, Sujata exhibited remarkable determination and transformed challenges into opportunities. He noted that her success serves as a beacon of hope and motivation for women in her community.

Encouraging other women, Sujata emphasized that with determination and appropriate support, they too can seize opportunities in fisheries and achieve self-reliance. “If I can accomplish this, so can others. Women should step forward and capitalize on such opportunities,” she encouraged.

She added that the Prime Minister's recognition has further solidified her commitment to expanding her business and continuing to contribute to her family’s income and the fisheries sector.
