Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 29 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to fishermen as a "robust pillar of Atmanirbhar Bharat", emphasizing their crucial role in bolstering the nation's economy and outlining government initiatives aimed at boosting the fisheries sector.
During his 132nd episode of the monthly radio show 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi remarked, "Our fishermen, both brothers and sisters, are not merely warriors of the ocean; they are foundational contributors to an Atmanirbhar Bharat. They venture into the sea even before sunrise, striving to support their families and enhance the country's economic growth."
He highlighted the government's commitment to improving the lives of fishermen through port developments and insurance initiatives, which he described as being "extremely beneficial".
PM Modi mentioned that due to the significant impact of weather on their activities, fishermen are receiving comprehensive support through advanced technologies.
"I am delighted to see that these initiatives are not only enriching our fisheries sector but also fostering a culture of innovation. Today, we witness continuous advancements in fisheries and seaweed cultivation, leading our fishermen towards self-reliance," he stated.
The Prime Minister shared an inspiring account of Sujata Bhuyan from Sambalpur, Odisha, who, as a homemaker, aspired to contribute more to her family. A few years ago, she embarked on fish farming in the Hirakud reservoir.
"Her initial journey was fraught with difficulties. She faced challenges such as unpredictable weather, sourcing feed for the fish, and managing household duties, but her determination never wavered. In just a few years, she transformed her venture into a prosperous business, becoming a beacon of hope for women in her community," he noted.
Additionally, he mentioned Havva Gulzar from Minicoy in Lakshadweep, whose story exemplifies the remarkable resilience of our mothers and sisters.
Previously managing a fish processing unit, she recognized the need for a proper cold storage facility to enhance her business. Consequently, she established a cold storage unit that has since become her strength, allowing her to operate with greater efficiency.
"Such inspiring efforts are being made across the nation. Shivling Satappa Huddar from Belagavi chose an unconventional route by creating a pond farm. He also underwent training for this venture and now earns a commendable income by selling fish from his pond. Furthermore, many have turned to seaweed cultivation, responding to its growing demand," he added.
"I want to commend all individuals involved in the fisheries sector. Their contributions to strengthening our economy are truly commendable," PM Modi concluded.
