Supriya Sule Urges Swift Action to Combat Rising Violence Against Women in Maharashtra
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 20 (NationPress) NCP (SP) Working President and Member of Parliament, Supriya Sule, has raised urgent alarm regarding the escalating crime rate affecting women's safety in Maharashtra in a letter addressed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. She expressed deep concern over the alarming increase in atrocities against women, which encompasses physical assault, murder, sexual exploitation, domestic violence, and kidnapping.
Sule particularly highlighted the shocking rise in the exploitation of young girls, pointing out that major metropolitan areas such as Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nashik are experiencing a crime wave that instills fear among residents.
She stressed that the anxiety extends beyond urban areas, greatly affecting rural communities and causing parents to be worried about their daughters' safety. This atmosphere, Sule noted, is severely hindering girls' opportunities for education, health, and overall development.
“It is disheartening that the reputation of our state, which is recognized nationwide for its law and order, is being compromised,” Sule remarked, emphasizing that ensuring a secure environment for citizens is a fundamental duty of the Fadnavis administration.
In response to these pressing issues, Sule outlined a detailed set of demands for Chief Minister Fadnavis. “As Home Minister, CM Fadnavis must take immediate and personal action to assess women’s security across all districts. We need a significant increase in female representation within the police force and an enhancement of night patrols. Furthermore, the government should establish and activate 'Vishakha Committees' in every district and promptly fill vacancies in the State Women’s Commission,” she urged.
Additionally, she called for bolstering village-level initiatives to combat domestic violence, enforcing a 'Zero Tolerance' policy against child marriage and child abuse, and issuing immediate safety guidelines for female students in educational institutions.
Sule appealed to Chief Minister Fadnavis to take these articulated concerns seriously and to implement a necessary action plan aimed at restoring a sense of safety for the women of Maharashtra.
