Supriya Sule Decries Assault on Maharashtra Minister as a Tragedy for Democracy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) Supriya Sule, the Working President of NCP (SP) and Member of Parliament, expressed her dismay on Tuesday regarding the reported physical assault on Maharashtra Minister Shambhuraj Desai during the election for the Satara Zilla Parishad president and vice president. She labeled this incident as both “unfortunate” and “tragic” for the state.
“This incident doesn't stem from the actions of the police alone. It illustrates the influence of an 'invisible power' that coerces the police to react in such a manner. The police wouldn't engage in such behavior independently. This is a calamity for Maharashtra,” she stated at a press conference.
Sule mentioned her intention to communicate with the Chief Minister about this matter. Furthermore, she had discussions with senior BJP leaders on Monday following reports in Delhi's newspapers.
She characterized the event in Satara as a “murder of democracy” and stressed that governance should be conducted in accordance with the Constitution established by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Sule reiterated that the police serve merely as tools for external forces.
“The Maharashtra police would never act in this manner unless pressured by those in authority behind them,” she asserted.
Sule clarified that this situation should not be viewed as a simple conflict of 'Big Brother' versus 'Little Brother'. She stressed that if such “hooliganism” is tolerated in a democratic society, it must be addressed vigorously. She cautioned that if such events can occur in Satara today, they could happen in other locations tomorrow. She has already collected details from Makrand Patil and intends to reach out to Shambhuraj Desai directly.
“If both Ministers, Shambhuraj Desai and Makrand Patil, have been assaulted, it warrants a thorough investigation. Both hold positions as Cabinet Ministers. Alarmingly, the very government to which you belong is engaging in such acts against you. What kind of days are we experiencing in Maharashtra, especially against allied parties?” she questioned.
The incident in Satara has ignited a nationwide debate. Reports indicate that Guardian Minister Shambhuraj Desai was allegedly attacked in public by BJP ministers. In retaliation, MLAs from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) staged protests on the steps of the Legislature. Sule termed Desai's remarks in the Legislature the previous day as “shocking”.
She concluded her statements by calling for a transparent inquiry. “If the 'younger brother' (ally) is being treated in this manner, we must all reflect on our actions. This nation will not operate based on individual whims; it is governed by the Constitution. I trust that the Maharashtra police would not act without being compelled by that hidden influence.”
