New Delhi, May 19 (NationPress) The Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs convened on Monday and voiced its strong support for Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, denouncing the online harassment he endured following the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan post Operation Sindoor, as per sources.
In a closed-door session, members from various political parties commended Misri’s exemplary management of India’s diplomatic communications following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 and the subsequent military actions. Misri was at the forefront of the Centre’s international and media briefings during the heightened tensions with Pakistan.
Following the ceasefire announcement, a segment of social media users targeted the diplomat, questioning his involvement in the diplomatic resolution. The situation escalated when personal information regarding his daughter was shared online, prompting Misri to limit the visibility of his X account by making it protected.
Although the committee aimed to issue a formal resolution condemning the harassment and showing solidarity with Misri, he personally requested that no formal resolution be adopted, as stated by Committee Chairperson Shashi Tharoor.
“There was considerable support within the committee to pass a resolution backing the Foreign Secretary due to the unjust online attacks he faced,” Shashi Tharoor informed reporters after the meeting. “However, he specifically asked that no formal resolution be recorded. Nonetheless, it was clear that the committee members collectively recognized his dedicated service to the nation and stood with him firmly,” he added.
The meeting, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, included several prominent lawmakers and was held amid increased tensions following Operation Sindoor, initiated by the Indian Armed Forces in response to the Pahalgam terror attack and the ensuing military exchanges between India and Pakistan.
