New Delhi, June 17 (NationPress) The Supreme Court has consented to hear on June 18 the petition from the suspended Tamil Nadu Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) H.M. Jayaram, who was taken into custody regarding the abduction of an 18-year-old teenager after a strict order from the Madras High Court.
A panel of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan agreed to consider the case on Wednesday after Jayaram's special leave petition (SLP) was requested for urgent attention.
His attorney stated: "Yesterday, an officer of ADGP rank was detained following the directive of the Madras High Court. The SLP was submitted today at 10 am. Please schedule the matter for immediate hearing."
The SLP submitted to the apex court seeks to halt the Madras High Court's order that mandated his arrest.
On Monday, Tamil Nadu Police apprehended ADGP Jayaram as he left the Madras High Court premises, leading him to the Thiruvalangadu police station for questioning. He was interrogated for nearly six hours, during which his formal statement was also recorded. He is anticipated to be presented before a judicial magistrate in Thiruthani later this week.
The senior IPS officer stands accused of enabling the abduction of a minor boy by allegedly supplying his official vehicle to a gang involved in forcibly separating a couple.
On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu Home Department issued a suspension order for ADGP Jayaram.
The abduction case revolves around a complaint made by a woman named Lakshmi, whose elder son married against her family’s wishes. The couple reportedly went into hiding, fearing backlash. In an effort to track them down, members of the woman’s family, allegedly supported by hired individuals, invaded Lakshmi’s home and abducted her younger son during their absence. The boy was later discovered abandoned near a hotel, injured and traumatized.
Further investigations indicated that an official vehicle linked to ADGP Jayaram was purportedly utilized in the abduction, prompting the Madras High Court to take immediate action against the high-ranking IPS official.
In a related update, Puratchi Bharatham Katchi leader and KV Kuppam MLA ‘Poovai’ M. Jagan Moorthy, who also faces allegations regarding the incident, reported to the Thiruvalangadu police on Tuesday morning. This case has sparked a political and administrative uproar, with opposition parties demanding a thorough and transparent investigation into the involvement of senior officials and elected representatives.
