Chennai, June 17 (NationPress) In a significant development related to a high-profile abduction case, the Tamil Nadu government suspended Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) H.M. Jayaram on Tuesday, just a day after he was apprehended by the Tiruvallur district police under orders from the Madras High Court.
The senior IPS officer faces allegations of facilitating the abduction of a minor boy by supposedly providing his official vehicle to a group involved in forcibly separating a couple.
The suspension order was issued by the Tamil Nadu Home Department in the afternoon.
On Monday, Jayaram was taken into custody immediately after he exited the High Court premises, where he had gone seeking legal recourse. He was swiftly escorted to the Thiruvalangadu police station for interrogation.
As per sources, Jayaram underwent questioning for almost six hours by the investigating officer.
His formal statement was recorded, after which he was taken to the Deputy Superintendent of Police’s office in Thiruthani.
He is anticipated to be presented before a judicial magistrate in Thiruthani later this week.
In a twist, Jayaram has approached the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the Madras High Court’s order that had mandated his arrest.
The case revolves around a complaint filed by a woman named Lakshmi, whose elder son had married a woman from Theni district against her family's wishes. The couple reportedly went into hiding, fearing repercussions.
In their quest to locate the couple, members of the woman's family, allegedly aided by hired men, broke into Lakshmi’s home and abducted her younger son in their absence. The boy was later discovered abandoned near a hotel, injured and traumatized.
Further investigations indicated that an official vehicle linked to ADGP Jayaram was seemingly used in the abduction, leading the High Court to take serious note and direct immediate action.
In another development, Puratchi Bharatham Katchi leader and KV Kuppam MLA ‘Poovai’ M. Jagan Moorthy, who is also facing allegations of involvement in the incident, appeared before the Thiruvalangadu police on Tuesday morning.
His appearance was in compliance with the High Court’s directive for him to cooperate with the investigation.
This case has ignited a political and administrative upheaval, with opposition parties demanding a transparent and impartial investigation into the involvement of senior officials and elected representatives.
