Why Did KNV Producers Approach the Supreme Court After Madras HC Halted Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' Release?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 12 (NationPress) The producer of the Tamil film 'Jana Nayagan', featuring actor-turned-politician Vijay, has approached the Supreme Court in response to an interim ruling from the Madras High Court that suspended a single judge's order to issue a censor certificate for the film.
KVN Productions LLP, the film's producer, submitted a Special Leave Petition on Monday, contesting the decision made by a division bench of the Madras High Court on January 9, which had put a hold on the earlier directive issued by a single judge for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a certificate.
Previously, on January 9, a single judge bench of the Madras High Court granted the producer's request and instructed the CBFC to swiftly provide a U/A 16+ certification for the film.
However, on the same day, the CBFC filed an urgent appeal before the division bench, which then reviewed the case and stayed the initial order.
The division bench, which included Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan, postponed the hearing for further discussion on January 20.
While suspending the order by Justice P.T. Asha, the division bench pointed out that the prior ruling was issued without allowing the CBFC adequate opportunity to respond.
It highlighted that the writ petition was filed on January 6 and brought to hearing on January 7.
Addressing the producer's choice to publicize a release date without obtaining CBFC clearance, the division bench noted that the film's producers seemed to have exerted undue pressure on the Madras High Court by mentioning the film's intended release date of January 9.
This controversy stems from delays in certification due to objections raised by one member of the examining committee, even as other members recommended a U/A 16+ certificate with specific modifications.
'Jana Nayagan' is anticipated with great interest, being Vijay's last film release prior to his full-time engagement in politics.
