Bengaluru, May 17 (NationPress) - BJP Yuva Morcha national president Tejasvi Surya expressed strong opposition on Saturday to the Karnataka government's proposal to extend metro services to the nearby city of Tumakuru. He argued that the focus should be on expediting the completion of unfinished metro lines within Bengaluru.
Confirmed sources reveal that the state government is moving forward with the plan to extend Metro services to Tumakuru, preparing a proposal for submission to the Central government.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has already delivered a feasibility report to the state government regarding this extension.
In his remarks, Tejasvi Surya stated, "The government must prioritize the swift completion of ongoing lines and enhance the existing network's density within Bengaluru. The metro's primary role is to improve intra-city connectivity."
He suggested that Tumakuru could benefit from connections via RRTS or suburban rail instead.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah included this proposal in the 2024 budget, thus initiating the feasibility study.
Once the feasibility report is reviewed, the Cabinet will discuss the project, followed by the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Central government’s approval.
Sources indicate that Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna, who represents Tumakuru in Lok Sabha, supports the initiative.
Additionally, State Home Minister G. Parameshwara and Cooperation Minister K. N. Rajanna both hail from Tumakuru.
The Bengaluru Metro is currently the second-longest operational metro system in India, spanning 76.95 kilometers, trailing only the Delhi Metro. Pending regulatory approvals, the much-anticipated Namma Metro Yellow Line is expected to commence operations by June. This line connects R.V. Road to Bommasandra and links the tech-centric Electronics City.
Projected completion for the critical Phase 1 of the Bengaluru International Airport is anticipated between June and September 2026, with Phase 2 of the airport metro expected to be completed by December 2026.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has shown a strong interest in extending metro services to Tumakuru.
Yashvanth Chouhan, Chief PRO of BMRCL, confirmed that the feasibility report proposes a 59.5-kilometre stretch of metro line, identifying 25 elevated metro stations along the route between Bengaluru and Tumakuru.
This report will detail anticipated expenses and station placements, he added.
Sources noted that the proposed metro services to Tumakuru would commence from the Madavara station, located on the Bengaluru-Pune National Highway, concluding at the Shira Gate in Tumakuru.
