The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast moderate rain with thunderstorms at one or two places across the Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu over the next four days, even as daytime temperatures are expected to climb up to three degrees Celsius above normal. A weak low-pressure trough persisting in the lower atmospheric levels over the State's coastal regions is driving the unsettled weather pattern.

Districts Likely to Receive Rain

Light rainfall is expected at a few places on Saturday, particularly across Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram districts. The Delta districts, along with neighbouring Puducherry and Karaikal, are also expected to receive light showers during the day.

Widespread rainfall is not anticipated, but isolated spells could bring temporary relief from the prevailing heat in several parts of the State. The RMC noted that one or two places in districts adjoining the Western Ghats could experience moderate rainfall until 31 August.

Thunderstorm and Wind Warning

Thunderstorms may be accompanied by gusty surface winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during spells of thunder and lightning, particularly in open areas and near trees or structurally weak buildings. Despite the rain activity, hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected to persist in areas that do not receive showers.

Fishermen Advisory: Squally Seas Off Southern Coast

A separate warning has been issued for fishermen operating off the southern Tamil Nadu coast. Squally weather with wind speeds reaching up to 65 kmph is likely over the sea until 31 August. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the southern Tamil Nadu coastal waters, the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjoining Comorin Sea during this period.

Those already at sea have been urged to exercise caution and follow official weather bulletins. Authorities have also asked fishing communities to secure boats and equipment in view of the strong winds. Small fishing vessels are considered particularly vulnerable in rough seas, and crews have been urged to suspend operations until the weather department officially withdraws its warning after a fresh assessment.

Heat Persists Despite Rain Outlook

The RMC's forecast underscores a dual challenge — localised rain activity on one hand, and above-normal temperatures on the other. Maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu may rise by up to 3°C above normal over the next four days, meaning large parts of the State could face continued heat stress even as coastal and ghat areas see intermittent showers. The public has been asked to monitor updated forecasts, as local conditions could shift depending on the movement and intensity of the prevailing atmospheric system.
