IMD forecasts thunderstorms over Western Ghats; Chennai to see light rain on 11 July
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday, 11 July forecast moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu, while Chennai and select other parts of the state are expected to receive light thundershowers later in the day. The forecast covers Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal through 15 July.
Active Weather Systems Behind the Forecast
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, two distinct weather systems are currently influencing rainfall across the region. A trough persisting at approximately 0.9 km altitude runs along the north Tamil Nadu coast, while a second trough — lying between 1.5 km and 3.1 km above mean sea level — stretches from Telangana to the east-central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast. Together, these systems are expected to sustain rainfall activity across parts of Tamil Nadu over the coming days.
What the IMD Forecast Says for 11 July
On Saturday, one or two places in the Western Ghats districts are likely to receive moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph. Isolated locations across the rest of Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal, may experience light rain with thunderstorms. Most other parts of the state are expected to remain dry through the day.
Outlook from 12 to 15 July
Moderate rainfall is forecast to continue at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts from 12 July to 14 July, while dry weather is expected to prevail over the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal during this period. On 15 July, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain at isolated locations in the Western Ghats, with predominantly dry conditions elsewhere.
Temperature Outlook for Tamil Nadu
Maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are expected to remain close to normal on Saturday with little likelihood of significant change. However, between 12 July and 14 July, some parts of Tamil Nadu could record maximum temperatures 2°C to 3°C above normal, while temperatures in remaining areas — including Puducherry and Karaikal — are likely to stay near seasonal averages.
Chennai-Specific Forecast
For Chennai, the IMD has forecast a partly cloudy sky on Saturday with the possibility of light rain accompanied by thunderstorms in a few parts of the city. The maximum temperature is expected to hover between 37°C and 38°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to remain between 27°C and 28°C.
