New Delhi, Oct 23 (NationPress) Tarun Kumar Pithode, a distinguished officer from the 2009 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Madhya Pradesh Cadre, has officially assumed the role of the new full-time Member Secretary of the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) as of Thursday.
Previously serving as the Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Pithode's transition to this crucial position has been confirmed through an official announcement.
His appointment is set for a five-year term, lasting until September 8, 2029, or until further directives are issued, whichever comes first.
Pithode takes over the responsibilities from Arvind Kumar Nautiyal, marking a significant shift in leadership.
Following a troubling daily average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 296—categorized as ‘Poor’—recorded in Delhi on October 19, the Sub-Committee on the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) of the CAQM initiated a comprehensive 12-point action strategy as part of Stage-II of the existing GRAP across the entire NCR.
On October 16, the Delhi government unveiled an extensive Winter Action Plan for 2025–26 designed to combat the seasonal surge in air pollution that typically occurs from October through February.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that the initiative encompasses 25 action points under seven distinct themes, including road dust management, vehicular emissions, industrial operations, open burning, solid waste, citizen involvement and oversight, and green innovations—collaborating with over 30 departments and agencies throughout the capital.
Sirsa has instructed senior officials to guarantee stringent, time-sensitive execution and real-time oversight via the Green War Room, ensuring clear accountability across various agencies such as PWD, MCD, NDMC, DSIIDC, DPCC, Transport, and Delhi Police.
He highlighted the importance of preparedness, asserting: “Compliance this winter will be non-negotiable—dust control, construction standards, PNG-only industrial activities, and targeted enforcement are being intensified with precision and speed.”
The Environment Minister further emphasized that all 30 involved agencies—including PWD, DDA, MCD, NDMC, DSIIDC, DPCC, and Delhi Police—must sustain daily communication through the Green War Room.
“Our citizens are essential partners in this effort; they should utilize the Green Delhi App, adhere to GRAP advisories, and choose public transport and electric vehicles as the city promotes e-mobility,” he added.
