Kolkata, Dec 27 (NationPress) Three individuals tragically lost their lives in a road collision triggered by dense fog in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal on Saturday.

As per police reports, the mishap was a head-on crash involving a compact car and a 12-wheeler trailer. Following the collision, the trailer plunged into a roadside ditch.

Authorities indicated that the small car was en route to Siliguri in north Bengal, while the trailer was approaching from the opposite lane.

The incident transpired in the Garam Basati region along National Highway 31 in Alipurduar after an overtaking attempt went awry.

The impact of the accident left the car utterly mangled.

The driver of the vehicle, Monojit Biswas, succumbed to injuries at the scene. He hailed from the Sankosh tea garden area within the Kumargram region of Alipurduar district.

The other two victims have been identified as Souvik Biswas and Raju Mandal.

Souvik, Monojit's cousin, also resided in the Sankosh tea garden, while Mandal was a local car mechanic from Alipurduar.

Residents reported that dense fog has enveloped north Bengal for several days.

Consequently, visibility on the roads has dropped to nearly zero, contributing to the accident, they noted.

Police officials have urged drivers to exercise caution while navigating the roads, especially on national highways.

Officials are contemplating offering hot milk, tea, and biscuits to drivers traveling during nighttime.

Siliguri's DCP (Traffic) Kazi Shamsuddin Ahmed remarked, "Visibility significantly declines during this season due to dense fog. It is imperative for everyone to drive with heightened caution. Today, we mourn the loss of three lives in a road accident. We strongly advise the public to remain vigilant on the roads."

In an unrelated incident this morning, a container truck overturned after striking the divider on the Vidyasagar Bridge in Kolkata.

A major disaster was averted as the container was moving at a low speed. Nonetheless, the event resulted in considerable traffic delays on the bridge connecting Howrah to Kolkata.
