Kolkata, Aug 15 (NationPress) Tragically, at least 10 individuals lost their lives when a passenger bus collided with a stationary truck in the East Burdwan district of West Bengal on Friday.

According to police reports, over 35 people sustained injuries during the accident.

The collision occurred around 8 a.m. on the National Highway (NH-19), which runs through East Burdwan.

It was reported that the passenger bus was traveling from Tarakeswar in Hooghly district towards the industrial hub of Asansol in West Burdwan.

In a horrific turn of events, the speeding bus struck the rear of a truck parked in the Fagupur area, crumpling the front end of the bus.

Authorities suspect that the bus driver may have dozed off, resulting in this catastrophic crash.

Initial rescue efforts were launched by local residents and subsequently supported by the state Fire Services Department.

The bodies of the ten deceased have been sent for post-mortem examinations.

Currently, the 35 injured individuals are receiving treatment at a local hospital, with many in critical condition.

"The death toll might rise later today," stated a police official.

Investigations are ongoing to identify the injured and the deceased.

Local residents have voiced concerns regarding the presence of trucks parked on the National Highway despite an adjacent service road, highlighting that previous complaints to the police fell on deaf ears.

"This negligence has led to frequent accidents at this location," commented a local resident.

However, police have not responded to these allegations.

In a related incident earlier this week, a delivery worker named Soumen Mandal was killed in a separate road accident in Kolkata's Salt Lake area when a speeding car struck him from behind.

Despite efforts to rush the car's occupants to the hospital, Mandal became ensnared in an iron railing and tragically perished when the car exploded.
