Kolkata, Feb 20 (NationPress) Tragically, two individuals lost their lives and six others sustained serious injuries in a road mishap at Kulti, located in the West Burdwan district of West Bengal. This incident occurred when a vehicle transporting passengers to the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh collided with a truck.
As per the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kolkata) for the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, Jabed Hossain, the collision happened on National Highway (NH)-19 when the passenger vehicle crashed into the rear of a truck at high speed late Wednesday night.
“The passenger vehicle was traveling from Bankura towards Prayagraj. Based on the latest updates, two passengers in that vehicle have died. The vehicle was moving at a significant speed. An investigation is ongoing,” he noted.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck abruptly halted to switch lanes on the highway near Kulti, resulting in the rear-end collision with the passenger vehicle.
The force of the impact was so severe that the passenger vehicle was completely crushed. Authorities have confiscated both the passenger vehicle and the truck involved in the crash. The truck driver and his assistant, however, remain unaccounted for.
The deceased have been identified as Shantanu Mukhopadhyay (65) and Sailen Bandopadhyay (60). Their remains have been sent for post-mortem examination.
The six injured individuals include Sourav Mukhopadhyay, Manasha Mukhopadhyay, Ananya Mukhopadhyay, Rumpa Bandopadhyay, Siluli Karmakar, and Somnath Chakraborty. All of them are related by family ties.
Chakraborty served as the driver of the vehicle. They have been admitted to a local hospital for treatment, with Karmakar in critical condition, according to a commissionerate official.
