Kolkata, Nov 12 (NationPress) A 15-year-old victim of rape from Keshiary in the West Midnapore district of West Bengal tragically took her own life on Tuesday evening, 18 days after ingesting pesticide, reportedly due to the overwhelming burden of social stigma and fear, as per police reports on Wednesday.

Authorities confirmed that the perpetrator has been apprehended and is currently in judicial custody. The family of the young girl is now advocating for severe punishment for the rapist, holding him responsible for her tragic decision to end her life.

The police reported that the minor succumbed on Tuesday evening at the Kharagpur Sub-divisional Hospital while receiving medical care.

According to a complaint lodged by her brother-in-law on September 9, the girl was employed at a factory owned by the accused in the Keshiary area and frequently commuted with him on his motorcycle, referring to him as 'uncle.'

At the end of August, the man allegedly lured her to a nearby forest under the guise of visiting the factory and subsequently raped her. He threatened her with severe repercussions if she revealed the incident.

Initially, the girl concealed the ordeal out of shame and fear. However, she eventually disclosed the incident to her family on September 9.

On that same day, her family filed a formal complaint with the police. Acting on this, the police arrested the accused the following day and presented him in court, where he was placed in judicial custody.

On October 24, the victim attempted to take her life by consuming pesticide found in her home.

She was first taken to the Keshiary Rural Hospital, where her condition was deemed critical, and subsequently transferred to the Kharagpur Sub-divisional Hospital. After battling for 18 days, she passed away on Tuesday. An autopsy of her body has been conducted.

Her family believes she was deeply affected by derogatory remarks from local residents or the family of the accused, which may have compelled her to resort to such a desperate measure.

A district police officer stated, "A case has been registered under specific sections, and the accused has already been arrested. He remains in judicial custody. Unfortunately, this tragic incident has occurred, and a thorough investigation will be conducted."
