Hyderabad, Oct 17 (NationPress) Telangana's Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has urged state BJP leaders to arrange appointments with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu to advocate for the approval of two significant Bills aimed at increasing reservations for the Backward Classes to 42 percent in sectors like education, employment, and local governance.
He called upon Union Ministers G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, as well as BJP State president N. Ramachander Rao, to spearhead the initiative in securing these appointments.
During a press conference held in Khammam, the Deputy CM emphasized that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and all political factions in the state are prepared to travel to Delhi if BJP leaders manage to obtain these appointments.
Vikramarka accused the central BJP government of obstructing the 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs), questioning the motives behind the delay in Parliament regarding the approval of the BC quota Bills.
He reaffirmed that the Congress government in Telangana is committed to ensuring 42 percent reservations for BCs. Following a comprehensive survey, two Bills were introduced and passed in the Assembly, subsequently submitted to the Governor, who forwarded them to the Centre for presidential approval.
He recalled that the state government has persistently requested, in writing, permission for an all-party delegation to meet with the President and Prime Minister regarding this pressing matter, yet received no response from the central government.
Vikramarka highlighted that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy previously led a protest in New Delhi demanding approval for the BC reservation Bills.
State Congress leader Mahesh Kumar Goud invited all political parties to join in a demonstration in Delhi; however, the BJP did not offer support.
He pointed out that the former BRS government enacted a law in 2018 capping overall reservation in local bodies at 50 percent. The Congress government responded by passing another Bill in the Assembly, which has also been sent to the Governor for approval.
Regarding the Supreme Court's decision to not intervene with a Telangana High Court ruling that suspended the Government Order to raise BC reservation to 42 percent, he stated that the government plans to analyze the judgment upon receipt and consult legal experts to determine the next steps.
A Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta declined to suspend the High Court's interim ruling, noting that it could not contradict constitutional rulings setting a 50 percent cap on total reservations in local body elections. However, they affirmed that local body elections could continue without the proposed increase in BC quotas.
The Deputy CM stated that a decision on this matter would be made during the upcoming State Cabinet meeting scheduled for October 23.
