Imphal, June 15 (NationPress) Tension escalated in Imphal East district of Manipur on Sunday due to a conflict regarding the cultivation of a paddy field and disputes over land ownership. The situation was calmed with the arrival of additional security forces, as confirmed by officials.
A police spokesperson revealed that a farmer from the Meitei community, hailing from the Leitanpokpi area, attempted to plough a paddy field in Sadu Lampak village, situated near a village inhabited by the Kuki tribe.
“Some local Kuki villagers intervened, asserting that the land did not belong to the Meitei farmer. Concurrently, members of the Meitei community present in the area also arrived at the scene. Videos surfaced online depicting the Kukis attempting to halt the activities of Meitei farmers,” the police spokesperson added.
In response, central and state security forces, accompanied by senior officials, hurried to the scene to restore order.
The police official stated that extra forces, led by Rakesh Balwan, Senior Superintendent of Police for Imphal East, were deployed to address the escalating situation.
Authorities have urged the community to refrain from believing in rumors. A local farmer mentioned that with the agricultural season approaching its peak, ongoing disputes over land access and inadequate protection for farmers are exacerbating ethnic tensions and contributing to unrest in the conflict-affected regions of Manipur.
Additionally, security forces managed to recover various arms and ammunition, including a .303 rifle and self-loading rifles, from Thoubal district.
On Saturday, security forces intercepted a vehicle traveling from Chelep to Tengnoupal at the Sita Motor Vehicles Check Post. Upon inspection, they discovered a black polythene packet believed to contain over 4 kg of opium in the rear seat. The items were seized, and four individuals in the vehicle were arrested.
