Agartala, Oct 24 (NationPress) Tension continues in Kamalpur sub-division located in Tripura’s Dhalai district on Friday, following injuries to over 12 individuals, including officials and traders. This unrest was triggered when a faction of the Tiprasa Civil Society (TCS) engaged in violence, arson, and shop looting during a statewide shutdown on Thursday evening, according to local officials.

A police spokesperson indicated that a substantial force of security personnel, comprising the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), has been mobilized to manage the situation, under the vigilant supervision of senior officials.

To avert further disturbances, Dhalai District Magistrate and Collector Vivek H.B. enforced prohibitory measures for an indefinite duration on Thursday night within the Kamalpur sub-division.

This order, invoked under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), aims to mitigate risks to life, property, and public order. The directive prohibits gatherings of more than four individuals, the possession or use of weapons or hazardous materials, as well as the delivery of incendiary speeches, sloganeering, or the distribution of hate-inducing pamphlets.

Furthermore, it limits the use of rooftops or properties for stone-pelting during disturbances and restricts vehicle movement in designated prohibited zones.

On Friday, Chief Minister Manik Saha affirmed that decisive actions would be taken against those responsible for Thursday’s violence in the Kamalpur sub-division.

Saha, who also oversees the Home portfolio, visited the government-operated Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital to assess the condition of the injured.

Among the 12 individuals hurt in the violence, three were transferred to the Medical College and Hospital in Agartala, while the others are receiving care at Kamalpur Bimal Sinha Memorial Hospital.

The injured include Salema Block Development Officer (BDO) Abhijit Majumdar, Engineer Animesh Saha, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Samudra Debbarma, and trader Biplab Deb.

Chief Minister Saha stated that he monitored the situation throughout Thursday night, revealing that the assailants, intent on causing harm, employed heavy bamboo sticks, iron rods, and slingshots during their attacks on local traders and officials at Santirbazar in Kamalpur.

“The assailants plundered goods from the Santirbazar market and even seized gold chains from women. These are all shameful actions masked as protests. I have instructed the police to act decisively. We will not yield to any pressure. Expect to see the consequences faced by the offenders soon,” Saha told reporters at the hospital.

State BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee also visited the hospital to inquire about the injured’s well-being.

CPI(M) Tripura State Secretary and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, senior minister Ratan Lal Nath, former Chief Minister and BJP Lok Sabha member Biplab Kumar Deb, Congress leader and ex-minister Sudip Roy Barman, along with other political figures, condemned Thursday’s violence.

The ruling BJP’s ally, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP)-affiliated Tiprasa Civil Society (TCS), led by TMP MLA Ranjit Debbarma, initiated a 24-hour shutdown across Tripura on Thursday to advocate for its eight-point demands, including the expulsion of illegal migrants.

According to police reports, to enforce the shutdown, picketers waving national flags conducted sit-ins at over 52 strategic locations and highways statewide, and even obstructed some railway tracks in West Tripura and Khowai districts on Thursday.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) announced the cancellation, short-termination, or control of nine trains, including four express trains, in Tripura due to the blockade of railway tracks by TCS activists.

NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma reported that four express trains—including the Sabroom (Tripura)–Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express, Charlapalli (Hyderabad)–Agartala Express, Silchar–Agartala Express, and Agartala–Silchar Express—along with five local trains, were either short-terminated, controlled, or cancelled on Thursday.

He added that due to the blockades, the NFR was compelled to take these measures, leaving thousands of passengers stranded under challenging circumstances.

Point of View

It is crucial to approach the situation with a focus on maintaining peace and order. While the grievances of the Tiprasa Civil Society are understandable, resorting to violence undermines their cause. The government must balance law enforcement with dialogue to address the underlying issues while ensuring the safety of all citizens.
