Raipur, June 30 (NationPress) In an unexpected development, the government of Chhattisgarh has opted to extend the tenure of Chief Secretary Amitabh Jain, whose retirement was scheduled for Monday. The decision emerged during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai at Mahanadi Bhawan in Raipur, with prior approval from the central government, as indicated by government sources.
A formal announcement regarding this extension will be made shortly. This marks the first instance of a chief secretary rank officer receiving an extension in Chhattisgarh, with Jain's term being extended for an additional three months.
A 1989-batch IAS officer, Jain was set to receive a formal farewell on Monday, symbolizing the conclusion of his tenure as the state's top bureaucrat. However, with the central government granting permission for an extension, the cabinet quickly ratified the proposal, allowing him to remain in office until further instructions. This decision has temporarily halted the race for succession to the esteemed position of Chief Secretary.
Had Jain retired as planned, senior IAS officers Subrat Sahu and Manoj Kumar Pingua were viewed as the leading candidates to become the 13th Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh. While Sahu, who is a 1992-batch officer, was considered the frontrunner, Pingua’s candidacy had also gained momentum in administrative discussions.
Pingua, currently the Additional Chief Secretary, oversees significant departments including Home, Jail, Forest, Health and Family Welfare, and Medical Education. He also presides over the Chhattisgarh IAS Association.
The cabinet meeting also explored the potential for an imminent reshuffle, with conversations regarding the inclusion of new ministers in the state cabinet.
On Sunday evening, Chief Minister Sai engaged in talks with Governor Ramen Deka at Raj Bhavan. Although the official statement described the meeting as a discussion on state matters, political analysts suspect it may have involved discussions about cabinet expansion.
Jain’s extension is interpreted as an effort to ensure administrative stability amidst ongoing policy shifts under the BJP-led government.
