Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday, 19 June issued a pointed warning to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Eknath Shinde-led faction, threatening a counter-offensive he called 'Operation Lotus' if the ruling alliance persists in attempting to poach his lawmakers. Speaking at the party's 60th Foundation Day rally in Mumbai, Thackeray's remarks came amid swirling speculation over a purported 'Operation Tiger' — a reported bid to engineer defections of six Lok Sabha MPs from the Thackeray camp.

The 'Operation Tiger' Threat and Thackeray's Counter-Warning

Thackeray was unambiguous in his response to the defection rumours. 'If they keep poaching our MPs or MLAs using 'Operation Tiger,' we too will have to carry out 'Operation Lotus' against them,' he declared at the rally. 'Operation Lotus' is a term previously associated with BJP's alleged strategy of engineering legislative defections — making Thackeray's invocation of it a deliberate and pointed barb at the ruling alliance.

He underscored the threat with a satirical analogy that has been circulating widely. He compared the ruling dispensation's use of political code names to a gold thief instructing police to call the crime an 'Operation Gold.' 'Even doctors are now confused whether they are performing a surgery or committing a theft,' he quipped. 'If this is how the country's politics is going to run, we will all have to come together and perform an operation on their Lotus,' he added.

On Patriotism and Direct Political Challenge

Thackeray directed sharp criticism at the BJP leadership over its alleged preference for engineering defections over direct political engagement. 'We are not Pakistanis. My family has a rich history of serving this land. If your lineage has one, speak up. We are patriots, in fact, a shade more patriotic than you,' he said, challenging the BJP to call his lawmakers openly rather than lure them covertly.

Hindutva Ownership and the Ideological Battle

On the contested terrain of Hindutva, Thackeray accused the BJP of practising what he termed a fraudulent version of the ideology — dismissing it as 'Bhondutva' (fake Hindutva). 'This Hindutva does not belong to the cow-urine-drinking crowd; that is their facade. This saffron flag belongs to the Warkaris and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Anyone who creates divisions within the saffron fold cannot be a true Hindu,' he asserted. The remarks signal a deliberate effort by Thackeray to reclaim the Hindutva narrative from the BJP — a fault line that has defined the two parties' bitter split since 2022.

Merger Rumours Firmly Rejected

Thackeray moved to firmly quash persistent speculation that Shiv Sena (UBT) is planning a merger with the Indian National Congress (INC). Invoking a historical anecdote from the Emergency era, he recalled how veteran political figure Rajni Patel had once pressured party founder Bal Thackeray to sign a merger letter — an overture that was rejected. 'We stayed with the BJP for 30 years and never merged with them. Why would we merge into the Congress now?' he asked. In a sharp reversal, he predicted it would be the BJP that eventually merges into the Shinde-led Sena.

Rebuke of Dharashiv MP Over Health Remarks

Thackeray also publicly rebuked Dharashiv MP Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, who had suggested in a recent media interview that Thackeray's health issues limited his campaigning during the Lok Sabha elections, and that Aaditya Thackeray should have toured more. Hitting back, Thackeray challenged the logic directly. 'If I weren't travelling or campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections, how on earth did you get elected? I held multiple massive rallies across every single constituency. That is the reason these people won,' he said.

The 60th Foundation Day rally has sharpened the contours of a deepening political battle in Maharashtra, with all eyes now on whether 'Operation Tiger' materialises — or whether Thackeray's counter-offensive reshapes the state's fractured political landscape.
