Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde launched a fierce counter-offensive against the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) on Friday, 19 June, using his party's 60th Foundation Day rally in Mumbai to deliver some of the sharpest rhetoric of the ongoing Maharashtra political standoff. His remarks came amid swirling speculation over a rumoured defection — dubbed 'Operation Tiger' — in which six Shiv Sena (UBT) Lok Sabha MPs are reportedly poised to cross over to Shinde's faction.

The 'Lion vs Dogs' Salvo

Addressing party workers, Shinde deployed vivid animal imagery to rebuff critics who had been targeting him over the rumoured defection. 'Look, this tiger stands right in front of you today!' he declared to the gathering. He added that he had watched for days as 'a few dogs bark daily,' before delivering the line that drew the loudest response: 'Dogs bark in packs, but a lion walks alone.'

The remarks were widely read as a direct swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut, who had warned that party workers would 'stomp' rebel lawmakers — a threat branded 'Operation Tudava' (Operation Stomp) — if they entered their constituencies. Shinde did not name Raut directly, but the targeting was unmistakable.

Shinde Mocks 'Operation Tudava' Warning

Responding to Raut's threat with barely concealed contempt, Shinde said: 'Some people claimed they would perform an operation on wolves, but he is just a compounder. How can a compounder perform an operation? Over here, Shrikant Shinde is the real doctor. Even though I am not a doctor, I still know how to operate. And to perform an operation, you need the heart of a tiger, not a wolf.'

The reference to his son Shrikant Shinde as 'the real doctor' was notable — a pointed contrast to Raut's self-styled surgical metaphor. Senior Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam backed Shinde's combative stance at the rally, reinforcing the message that the faction would not be intimidated.

Recalling the June 2022 Rebellion

Shinde also revisited his dramatic June 2022 rebellion, which toppled the Uddhav Thackeray government and installed him as Chief Minister. 'They told me I had to come via Worli. Mumbai is nobody's personal estate. I came alone by road, bypassing the helicopter at the airport, and I even stopped in Worli. Back then, those who threatened me were busy watching me online from inside their homes,' he said.

The recollection was a deliberate reminder of how past threats against him had failed to materialise — and an implicit warning that 'Operation Tudava' would meet a similar fate. 'This is just the trailer; the movie is still to come,' Shinde declared, dropping what many observers interpreted as a heavy hint at an imminent political development.

The 'Operation Tiger' defection, if it materialises, would deliver a significant blow to Thackeray's parliamentary strength and further consolidate Shinde's position within the Mahayuti alliance.
