Is Tharoor Really Shifting Towards BJP?

Synopsis

P.J. Kurien, a veteran Congress leader, has raised eyebrows over Shashi Tharoor's recent actions, suggesting they indicate a shift towards the BJP. This controversy adds another layer to Tharoor's already complex relationship with the Congress party. What does this mean for Tharoor and the party moving forward?

Key Takeaways

  • P.J. Kurien's criticism highlights internal strife within the Congress.
  • Tharoor's acceptance of a government invitation may suggest a shift in allegiance.
  • The situation reflects broader challenges for Congress in maintaining unity.
  • Tharoor's history with the party has been complicated since 2009.
  • Future decisions could define his political trajectory.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 19 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure and former Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, P.J. Kurien, expressed his discontent towards Shashi Tharoor, the MP representing Thiruvananthapuram for four terms, for actions that seem to contradict the party's stance.

“Tharoor must remember that it was the Modi administration that invited him to head the national delegation due to his position as an MP. His lack of criticism towards the government’s policies raises concerns, and it’s essential to acknowledge that it was Congress who put him forward,” Kurien stated, visibly perturbed.

“If the public perceives Tharoor as gravitating towards the BJP, it’s understandable,” he added.

Kurien emphasized that Tharoor should have shown basic respect by notifying the party leadership prior to accepting the government’s invitation.

“That’s the minimum expectation from a Congress leader, yet this protocol was overlooked,” he remarked.

“If he perceives himself as a global figure, he might as well consider running as an independent candidate,” Kurien suggested.

The veteran Congress leader also conveyed his disappointment with the party's top officials for allowing the situation to deteriorate. “This matter could have been resolved with more tact,” Kurien commented.

Since Tharoor was unexpectedly chosen by Congress in 2009 and went on to win three consecutive elections, his rapport with the state unit has been contentious. He has largely distanced himself from the internal workings and decision-making within the Kerala Congress.

While Kurien has stepped back from active politics due to his age, other party members have echoed similar criticisms.

Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, the chairman of the Kerala Congress disciplinary committee, was among the first to voice his disapproval, stating that Tharoor should have consulted the party leadership.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan chose not to comment, asserting that the decision lies with the party's high command.

Point of View

It is crucial to observe the dynamics within Congress and the implications of Tharoor's actions. While Kurien's concerns highlight internal party conflicts, it’s important to consider Tharoor's individual journey. The evolving political landscape calls for leaders to navigate their paths with both integrity and strategic foresight.
