New Delhi, May 24 (NationPress) Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is spearheading a multi-party Indian parliamentary delegation on a diplomatic mission across five nations, including the US, highlighted the symbolic importance of starting their journey with a visit to the 9/11 Memorial in New York.
Addressing the media, Tharoor stated, "As you are aware, we are all embarking on this trip. Our initial destination is Georgetown, Guyana, but due to the absence of direct flights, we will be stopping in New York. This provides us a chance to visit the 9/11 Memorial and remind the global community that we, like those honored there, have also suffered from terrorist attacks—not just once, but repeatedly over the past 40 years."
The senior MP further added, "I find it crucial that this symbolic gesture signifies the start of our journey. We are looking forward to celebrating Guyana's Independence Day, and once we arrive in the US, we will provide updates on our initiatives. We aim to make people aware of how we have coped with terror attacks and the measures we have taken."
The delegation led by Tharoor, which includes Members of Parliament from various political parties, represents a rare instance of bipartisan cooperation in international relations. The group consists of Shambhavi (MP, LJP – Ram Vilas), Sarfaraz Ahmad (MP, JMM), G.M. Harish Balayogi (MP, TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (MP, BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (MP, BJP), Milind Murli Deora (MP, Shiv Sena), and Tejasvi Surya (MP, BJP).
They will be joined by Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu, indicating the involvement of the MEA in the coordination of this mission.
The agenda for the visit includes: Guyana on May 25, Panama on May 27, Colombia on May 29, Brazil on May 31, and the US on June 3. In each nation, the MPs are anticipated to interact with their counterparts and diaspora communities.
The delegations aim to express India's united political position against terrorism and seek international backing to hold Pakistan accountable.
