Theft at BJP MLA Singhvi's Jaipur home near Raj Bhavan; ₹1.5 lakh cash stolen
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A thief broke into the Civil Lines residence of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator and former minister Pratap Singh Singhvi in Jaipur on the night of 29 October 2026, making off with approximately ₹1.5 lakh in cash and artificial jewellery, officials confirmed on Thursday. The burglary occurred in one of the capital's most heavily guarded localities, located barely 300 metres from Raj Bhavan and around 500 metres from the Chief Minister's official residence.
How the Break-In Unfolded
According to police, the intrusion took place at around 2:15 am on Thursday. The masked suspect allegedly broke a kitchen window — using a screwdriver to force the lock — before entering the premises. CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced, which reportedly shows the intruder carrying a bag over his shoulder and crawling through the garden area on his knees before reaching the main building. The suspect's face is not clearly visible in the footage.
The intruder reportedly remained inside the premises for nearly an hour while more than 10 people were asleep in the house. The family discovered the break-in the following morning after finding the kitchen window shattered and household items scattered. Singhvi's personal assistant Rajveer Singh confirmed the losses to officials.
High-Security Zone Under Scrutiny
The Civil Lines locality where the incident occurred has more than 100 policemen deployed round the clock, with strict monitoring of vehicle and pedestrian movement. Despite these arrangements, the theft has raised pointed questions about the effectiveness of security in the area. This is the kind of neighbourhood where even routine entries and exits are logged — making the breach particularly difficult to explain away.
Singhvi was not at home at the time of the incident; he was in his assembly constituency of Chhabra in Baran district in connection with panchayat elections. He was informed of the burglary on Thursday morning and subsequently spoke to the Jaipur Police Commissioner over the phone.
Investigation Under Way
The Station House Officer (SHO) of Sodala police station was among the first officials to arrive at the scene, followed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), who visited the residence to assess the situation. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has been called to collect evidence. DCP Rajiv Raj stated that suspects are being identified from CCTV footage and that the accused would be arrested shortly. A special team has been formed to investigate the case.
According to officials, jewellery worth approximately ₹1 lakh, along with artificial jewellery, was also among the stolen items.
Congress Seizes on Law-and-Order Breakdown
The burglary drew a swift political response from the opposition. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot sharply criticised the BJP-led state government over the law-and-order situation, alleging a pattern of rising crime across Jaipur.
Gehlot said, 'Law and order in Jaipur, the state capital, has completely collapsed. The persistent occurrence of crimes in the city is instilling fear among the general public. On Wednesday night in Jamdoli, five miscreants attacked two jeweller brothers with iron rods and sticks and looted ₹20 lakh. When a woman attempted to chase the perpetrators, they opened fire at her. Earlier this month, on October 1, a theft worth ₹5 crore took place at a watch showroom on Tonk Road.'
He further added, 'A theft has been reported at the residence of former minister Pratap Singh Singhvi in Civil Lines — an area considered among the most secure in Jaipur and home to both the Governor and the Chief Minister. If thieves can enter such a heavily protected locality, what assurance of safety can the common man possibly have?'
Gehlot also referenced a recent abduction of a businessman from Jaipur's Central Park, calling on the BJP government — now reportedly in its third year in power — to move beyond advertisement spending and focus on concrete public safety measures. This comes amid what opposition leaders describe as a wider deterioration of law and order across Rajasthan.
