Is the Thiruvalla Spa Rape Case Involving Police Officials?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvalla (Kerala), Feb 7 (NationPress) The inquiry into the horrific sexual assault of a spa worker in Thiruvalla, Kerala, has now escalated to scrutinize police officials, amid grave accusations of collaboration between organized crime syndicates and certain members of the local law enforcement.
Under orders from higher authorities, the Home Department has initiated an internal investigation due to concerns that some officers may have quietly supported these criminal factions operating in the region.
Initial findings suggest that personnel associated with the Thiruvalla police station allegedly received regular “monthly payments” from spa businesses. Investigators are also looking into whether these officers frequently visited multiple spas, including the site of the assault, and if they provided illegal aid to the perpetrators.
The inquiry is focused on whether police inaction or implicit endorsement allowed gang activities to thrive without intervention. Senior police officials have committed to taking strict measures against any personnel found guilty of wrongdoing or complicity.
The alarming incident took place on February 1 at a spa near Thiruvalla. As per police reports, Maranam Subin, a suspect under the KAPPA Act, along with his accomplices, had previously visited the spa demanding extortion payments and threatening the owner with a demand for ₹50,000. Upon refusal, they allegedly began terrorizing the employees.
After failing to collect the money, the culprits forcefully entered the spa on the afternoon of February 1. The victim recounted to investigators that she was dragged into a room, where the attackers held a knife to her throat and subjected her to a vicious sexual assault.
She characterized the experience as incredibly traumatic and informed authorities that during the attack, she was told it was a “quotation,” implying it was a contracted act. The assailants even recorded the assault on a mobile device, she stated.
The victim further claimed she was taken aback to see an employee at the spa exchanging friendly greetings with the attackers while the assault was ongoing. She shared that she has not yet recovered from the trauma and is enduring significant psychological distress.
The gang reportedly escaped after stealing ₹25,000 from the establishment, threatening to kill the victim if she reported the incident.
Following the incident, concerns arose regarding delays in filing the case and allegations that some police officers aided the accused. However, the District Police Chief refuted these claims, asserting that the FIR was registered on February 3 after detailed statements were collected and supporting evidence was gathered.
Six individuals have been identified as suspects in this case, with three, including Subin, having been arrested as of now. Authorities indicated that Subin is a notorious criminal with a history of multiple offenses, including attacking police personnel within a police station, and had recently been released after serving time under the KAPPA Act.
Law enforcement has pledged to pursue this case diligently, without bias.
