3 killed in head-on SUV collision in Begusarai, Bihar; 9 injured
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Three young men were killed and nine others injured after two Scorpio SUVs collided head-on near the Angrezi Dhala railway crossing under the Singhaul police station area in Begusarai, Bihar, late on Sunday night. The crash, which occurred in the Pokharia locality, has left the community in mourning.
What Happened
According to police, six friends from Pokharia had set out late at night in one Scorpio, heading to Simaria for a holy dip in the Ganga River. As their vehicle neared the Angrezi Dhala crossing, it collided violently with another Scorpio travelling from the opposite direction. The force of the impact was severe enough to badly mangle both vehicles, trapping passengers inside and triggering panic among bystanders.
Local residents who heard the sound of the crash and the cries for help rushed to the scene and helped pull injured occupants from the wreckage before emergency services arrived.
The Deceased
The three victims have been identified as Rishabh Kumar (26), son of Lalan Paswan of Pokharia Ward No. 37; Sunny Kumar (24), son of Baiju Sharma; and Himanshu Kumar (22), son of Chikku Sah alias Rajan of Ward No. 36. Rishabh Kumar was reportedly pursuing his B.A. Part 1 studies at SBS College and was the youngest of three brothers. Sunny Kumar was the third among four brothers in his family.
Rescue and Treatment
All nine injured were shifted to hospitals for treatment, with eight of them receiving care at a private hospital. Singhaul police reached the accident site shortly after, seized both damaged vehicles, and launched a formal investigation into the cause of the crash.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are examining whether overspeeding, poor visibility, or other contributing factors led to the fatal collision, according to officials. The incident has once again drawn attention to road safety concerns, particularly the dangers of high-speed late-night travel on Bihar's highways and district roads.
Notably, the group was reportedly connected to a wedding procession, meaning what had begun as a festive occasion turned to grief within moments. This incident is part of a troubling pattern of fatal road accidents at unlit railway crossings and narrow stretches in Bihar's district roads. As the Pokharia community mourns three young lives, pressure is likely to mount on local authorities to address road safety infrastructure in the area.
