Jammu, May 4 (NationPress) - In a tragic incident, three soldiers lost their lives in a road mishap on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, located in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, according to officials.

The unfortunate event occurred when an army vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a steep gorge near Battery Chashma in Ramban.

"The driver lost control of the vehicle, which subsequently fell into a gorge near Battery Chashma on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway today. The three soldiers died instantly. A rescue operation was launched promptly," an official stated.

Authorities have filed a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the incident.

The Jammu-Srinagar highway has faced intermittent closures over the past two weeks due to landslides caused by heavy rainfall along the Ramsoo-Ramban section.

In several areas, mudslides and landslides have severely damaged the roadway. Although repairs have been made and traffic has been restored, the over 40-km-long Ramban-Ramshoo stretch continues to be a vulnerable point along this crucial nearly 300-km-long highway.

All military and civilian supplies destined for the landlocked Valley pass through this highway. Any temporary closure of this vital route leads to shortages of essential goods, such as petroleum products and food supplies, in the Valley.

During highway closures, unscrupulous traders often take advantage of the situation, creating artificial shortages to inflate prices for desperate consumers.

This uncertainty surrounding the highway has driven the people of Kashmir to long for a rail connection to the rest of the country for the past 70 years.

The much-anticipated rail link from Katra in the Jammu division to Baramulla in the Valley is now ready for inauguration.

Once operational, this rail link will greatly benefit sectors like horticulture, agriculture, tourism, industry, and education, making travel affordable and reliable throughout the year.

Point of View

The need for a reliable transit system cannot be overstated, as it impacts not only military logistics but also the daily lives of civilians in Jammu and Kashmir.
